Haskill Lately: Daylight Savings, Protein Powders, Fleur-owner Whitney's Haskill Essentials & more

3/11/2025
Hello and Happy Tuesday!
Ahh daylight savings time… it seems that every year just as we’ve finally hit our spring stride we get thrust back into mornings in darkness. Anyone else having a hard time adjusting to the time change? You’re not alone. There’s been buzz for the past few years around Daylight Savings Time, and whether we should abolish it–and it’s not just because it’s a mild inconvenience. Studies show that in the week after DST each year there’s an increase in heart attacks, fatal car accidents, mental health issues and more–which is pretty crazy.
The past few days we’ve been doing our best to get natural sunlight first thing (even if that’s when we’re driving kids to school…), and to get outside even for 15 minutes and get connected to nature before starting the day. For Colette that looks like grabbing a to-go coffee at Fleur and then taking her dog on a quick walk around the neighborhood.
We caught up with Fleur owner Whitney Brien, and asked her about her favorite ways to incorporate wellness into her daily life and business. She also shared with us her “can’t live without” products from Haskill Creek. See what they are in this month’s Haskill Essentials.
We’re also making sure to literally take a breath of fresh air for a few minutes every morning by opening up doors and windows. Yes, even when it’s 35 degrees out. And to stay on top of our morning routines by stretching, tidying up and starting the day with a high-protein breakfast.
Yes, the protein hype is real, and we’re here for it. It seems like everywhere you look, there’s someone telling you to incorporate more protein into your diet–whether your goal is jumpstarting your metabolism, gaining muscle and losing fat, or just having more energy throughout the day, we’re told that protein is the answer. So, we’ve been doing our best to get more protein everyday, but it’s not always easy.
Enter: Protein Powders! What was once a genre marketed in large part to athletes, is now becoming an everyday staple for most people–ourselves included. Powders are an easy and effective way to get, in some cases, upwards of 20 grams of protein in a single smoothie.
So, you can imagine our horror when earlier this year a study was being circulated on the internet and social media about heavy metals and contaminants in protein powders. Not only did this trigger a personal flag (we’ve been on the smoothie train for months!) but we were also worried about the implications that this study might have for our customers–we sell protein powder at Haskill Creek, and we’ve done our research, but what if we missed something?!
But, instead of panicking, we dug further into the study and the issue, and wrote our take on the topic. We also compiled a list of companies that provide clear and transparent testing for their protein powder products here–definitely take a look!
Also this week we’re looking at more skincare ingredients. Next up: Phenoxyethanol–a preservative that is used in products to keep them fresh. Intrigued? Check out our post here.
