November 19, 2024

The holiday season is fully upon us (can you believe we’ll be eating turkey next week?!) and there’s so much to be thankful for this year. It’s easy to get wrapped up in the day-to-day hustle and bustle, but it’s also important to take some time out of our busy lives to recognize all of the great things going on around us. Did you know that practicing gratitude as self-care is actually proven to benefit our overall wellness? Studies have shown that incorporating a gratitude practice can help reduce depression and anxiety, improve self esteem and more… super interesting and well worth taking a few minutes out of each day!

As cheesy as it sounds, this year (and every year) we’re extra grateful for the friends & family we get to celebrate the holidays with. It’s such a fun time for family bonding and creating new traditions.

Some Thanksgiving traditions we just can’t skip… turkey is one of those things. Whether you’re in Montana, Florida or somewhere inbetween… Thanksgiving without the turkey just feels wrong. (Have you ever tried frying a turkey?! Read about Scot’s favorite way to cook a Thanksgiving turkey here.

Turkey aside… we’ve still got room to creatively mix things up with appetizers and sides.

We’re definitely trying out this puff pastry tart with brie, cranberries, apple and cinnamon spiced honey…Say less! And, as a fun take on sides we’ve got our eyes on sweet potato orzo salad & savory stuffed squash. For dessert, how about mixing it up and finishing on a healthy note with this apple crumble a la mode from Cymbiotika?

Another great tip… try to start the day on a healthy note too! Before pouring that pomegranate mimosa (just us?!) try sipping on some Kroma bone broth in the mid-morning or around lunch, depending on when you plan to eat Thanksgiving “dinner,” to get a gut-friendly jump start on the day, curb cravings and boost energy.

If you’re ready to ditch the mimosa, but want to celebrate with a festive drink anyway, you’re in luck! We caught up with the owners of Hold My Bar, Montana’s first mobile N/A bar service. They talk all about starting their business, and the N/A movement in our interview here. Plus, they gave us two of their favorite holiday drink recipes, made with N/A options you can find right at Haskill Creek!

Still curious? That’s another great reason to stop by Haskill Creek this Friday, November 22, for our holiday shopping event. Hold my Bar will be serving up delicious N/A cocktails, and we’ll have other complementary drinks options and charcuterie from our friends at Trovare.

Stop in to get an IV from BusyBee IV, talk about skincare & makeup with Julie Westadal, chat with Alpine Gold Tallow & Farm Fueled Nutrition, and Dr. Andrea Emde from Gislason Chiropractic, and of course.. Get an exclusive 20% off of everything at Haskill Creek from 4-8PM

Speaking of events… we’ve got two awesome floral design workshops coming up with Forage & Floral. Whether you’re hosting Thanksgiving, or heading to someone else’s home, our Thanksgiving Centerpiece workshop this Thursday November 21, is one you won’t want to miss. Talk about a beautiful addition to your table, or a gorgeous hostess gift! Sign up here. Plus we’re making holiday wreaths on December 4th, a favorite tradition of ours! You can sign up for that workshop here.

Hold

We interviewed the pioneering mobile mocktail bar, "Hold My Bar"- to learn how they're shaking up the N/A industry. Read to the bottom for two recipes!

First, a brief introduction!

Hi everyone. We are Uriah Rosenzweig and Mary Cortesi and we are the co-owners and operators of "Hold My Bar" which is Montana's very first fully NA bar and bottle shop. We run a mobile unit out of a horse trailer and travel throughout the state doing pop ups and collaborating with other businesses to bring a unique, all inclusive drinking experience to communities.

1. What inspired you to start a mobile N/A beverage bar business, and how has the industry evolved since you launched?

We were inspired in the year 2022 when Uriah was tired of the same old bland and boring NA alternatives that seemed to be available everywhere (i.e. soda water, cola, tea, etc.) and wanted something different. The research began in 2022, we created the LLC in 2023, and we launched earlier this year. Since our first launch in Feb, we have seen more and more people coming to us out of curiosity and also excitement. The NA industry is the fastest growing industry in beverage….period. That shows in the amount of traffic we no see at the events we attend.

2. Non-alcoholic beverages are growing in popularity—why do you think more people are choosing N/A drinks today?

The number one reason why people are choosing NA beverages these days, in my opinion and according to research, is people are more and more health conscious. People also have a lot more resources in our hands than ever before. That has allowed us, as a whole, to not be continuously blinded by the alcohol industry. The notion that "a glass of wine a day is good for you" is absolutely absurd and strictly marketing. Young people, especially, are hip to what's cool….and not drinking alcohol is more and more cool by the day.

3. What are your favorite non-alcoholic drinks and/or recipes to serve?

I love coming up with our own concoctions and trying them at home before bringing them to market. Some of our recipes are simply NA versions of popular cocktails and some are completely unique to our bar. I would say my favorite overall would be the "Witch Doctor" which is something we came up with using a zero proof dark cane spirit, pineapple juice, and a botanical spirit called Black Ginger. Or anything I can add colorful glitter to….thise are my favorites. I love being creative behind the bar and watching people's eyes light up over a shimmery drink.

4. Can you share a memorable event or celebration where your mobile bar made a significant impact?

I would like to share two events where I feel we made an impact and for sure these people made a huge impact on us. In September, we had the honor and pleasure of working with Ronald Mcdonald House Charities of Western Montana for their biggest fundraiser of the year. It was truly a gift to be there. That is an amazing organization with amazing people, and I feel like we both made a huge mark on each other. The other event was our first wedding in October.  It was a completely dry wedding and we had the honor of being the only outside beverage vendor. We had never been part of something like that and the love we felt was definitely in the air…a true blessing and honor.

5. How do you see non-alcoholic drinks fitting into the broader health and wellness trend?

The fact that you can now find NA spirits at Home Goods is a huge swing in the right direction. As more and more people become aware of what's going on in the NA world and how its not just your grandpa's O'Douls anymore, I think people will start seeing the benefits of some of these spirits. A lot of the NA spirits coming out now have great health benefits and are loaded with adaptogens, botanicals, and nootropics and are great for the mind and body.

6. Are there any surprising benefits of N/A drinks that people might not know about?

There are a ton of surprising health benefits in a lot of the spirits coming out these days. For instance, The Pathfinder is a hemp derived distilled NA spirit that contains wormwood, angelica root, ginger, sage, saffron, and wild crafted douglas fir, all of which have unique benefits. And that's just one of many brands doing great things.

8. What are some of the best pairing ideas for non-alcoholic drinks at events, like food or snacks that complement your drinks?

Our drinks are so good they pair with everything from chewing gum to a tomahawk steak! In all seriousness though, I think our margarita has paired well with everything. Its a pretty versatile drink so whether you have a burger, chicken, fish, or just veggie options, a good NA marg seems to hit the spot.

9. For people who are new to non-alcoholic drinks, what would you recommend as a good place to start?

For people that are new to the NA industry and are curious, I would recommend starting with a  canned ready to drink (RTD) beverage, or if they can find somewhere that has mocktails using actual NA spirits rather than just juice and soda water, guve it a try.  I think people will be surprised at the quality of the stuff coming out these days. And obviously if someone is curious, we hope they come find us and try us out or stop in your store and grab a bottle of Kava Haven to go…you can't go wrong with kava.

Whether people are sober, sober curious, or a full fledged daily drinker we welcome everyone to join in the fun.

Just remember… "It's Nobody's Buzz-ness But Your Own!"

Here are two NA recipes from Hold My Bar!

Hello and Happy Tuesday!

It feels like every year the holidays creep earlier and earlier, and this year is no exception. With Halloween behind us, and frosty (and sometimes snowy!) mornings happening more and more often, we’ve got gathering with friends & family, hosting and gift-shopping on our minds.

Hosting get-togethers can be so fun, but also overwhelming. If creating a beautiful tablescape is in your vision, but you don’t know where to start, we’ll help take that off of your plate! We put together a few beautiful and easy options that can transition from Thanksgiving to Christmas and well into spring!

We’ve also partnered with Forage & Floral again this year for two fun interactive classes! First, on November 21, we’ll be creating Thanksgiving centerpieces. Then on December 4, we’ll be getting festive with holiday wreaths. Both classes will take place in our downtown location, at 33 Baker Ave. Space is limited so be sure to grab your girlfriends and sign up soon!

Speaking of events… our 3rd annual Holiday Shopping Sale is coming up! Every year we bring in vendors and serve up appetizers and beverages, and give our customers 20% off the whole store! It’s a great opportunity to peruse our gift guide, knock out some of your holiday shopping before the craziness begins, and to have a fun Friday night with friends. So, mark your calendars for November 22—it’s one that you don’t want to miss!

One thing we’re SUPER excited about this fall is the expansion of our men’s section. We’ve been searching high and low for clean men’s skincare that works, and that our husbands want to use. Guess what… we found it! Caldera + Lab has clean ingredients, isn’t overly smelly, and works great! Read more about why we love it here.

We’ve got more holiday inspiration like easy recipes and N/A drink options, plus our comprehensive Haskill Gift Guide coming out soon. Be sure to subscribe to our newsletter so you don’t miss a thing!

October 22, 2024

This week we’ve got sleep on the brain. One of the most common things our customers ask us about is improving their sleep. It seems that no matter what the season, sleep can be a challenge for so many of us. And, while there are certainly supplements that you can take to help improve sleep in one way or another, there’s so much to the science of sleeping well that we like to take a more holistic approach to issues that inevitably come up for people.

That’s why we created an entire section of our store dedicated to sleep—everything from eye masks to white noise machines to magnesium can be found there. We also dug deeper into the research and covered what we found out on our blog. Since it’s such a complex (and fascinating!) part of our lives, we broke it down into 4 areas of improvement.

Whether you want the basics of sleep hygiene, are looking for ways to optimize your bedroom for sleep, or are looking to upgrade your pre-bed routine, we’ve got you covered. We also dug into ways that we can improve sleep quality by changing some of our habits throughout the day. More on that here.

This Fall we’ll be plugging in our happy lights in the morning, reading before bed instead of screen-time (have you started North Woods yet?!), and getting cozy (and spooky!) at home with our friends and family.

Speaking of getting spooky—we’ve got a really cute selection of festive and non-cheesy Halloween finds in-store now, pop by to grab them before they’re gone! We’re also participating in downtown Whitefish’s trick-or-treat street on October 31. Come by Haskill Creek, grab some candy, and take a picture outside with our Halloween banner. It’s so fun to celebrate Halloween in Whitefish; we put together a little map of our favorite places to stop/ways to celebrate here… Boo!

We’re always looking for inspiration in the kitchen. If you’re like us, check out Brightland’s twist on roasted carrots here.

Lastly, we’ve had so many people reach out to us about what’s happening with our Voerman store—we’re truly blown away by your support. We have a quick update on what’s going on at that location here.

Until next time!

Haskill

Hanging out with artist Tessa Heck, getting in the spirit of Fall, and upping our skincare routines!

October 8th, 2024

One of the things we’re passionate about at Haskill Creek is supporting local as much as possible. Kalispell-based artist, Tessa Heck, has been on our radar for some time–we love her bright and colorful takes on Montana landscapes. (In fact, Colette’s got one of her prints hanging in her living room.) And we love carrying her prints in our store! Tessa came by Haskill Creek recently to hang out with us, and pick out some of her Haskill Creek essentials. From salt & pepper grinders to body scrubs, we love everything she picked. Check out all of her picks here.

Speaking of local–we’ve got fall events in the Flathead Valley on our radar! We’re looking forward to making Fire Cider at Box of Rain on Oct 22 (register here), getting into the spooky season over at the Clydesdale Outpost, and of course hit up the pumpkin patch. While we’re disappointed that we can’t host fall events at our Voerman location this year, we’re excited to activate the downtown space as much as possible.

On Monday, October 14, we’re kicking things off with an EmerginC skincare event. Our in-house estititcian, Julie Westdal, will be there to answer any questions about the products or your skincare concerns, plus we’ll be offering 20% off of all EmerginC products for the entire day! We’ve been on a skincare kick lately, and Carrie highlighted some of her favorite EmerginC products here.

Two weeks ago we talked about what we were doing to reset this season, and one of the best things we’ve done is the Kroma 5-Day Reset. Colette was our guinea pig and completed the reset two weeks ago. We can’t say enough about how awesome it was, and she’s been incorporating some of the habits & lifestyle changes from the week in her day to day ever since. If you’re interested in doing a little reset yourself, definitely check her experience out here

Thanks for following along, we hope to see you in the store soon!

Kroma

We talk a lot about all of the facets of self-care: whether that’s switching to a clean skincare routine, buying a filtered shower-head, taking yoga class, or swapping to mold-free coffee. We also know that a good chunk of healthy living and self-care is also about what we put in our bodies in the form of food. While Haskill Creek is not a grocery store, we do carry a variety of pantry items that are high-quality, easy and even (gasp!) fun additions to or swaps for your everyday staples.

On our quest to expand our pantry section, we were looking for (AND FOUND) a delicious & nutritive bone broth to add to the store. Kroma delivers big in both of those categories.

When we did more digging, we found that there was so much more to the brand than just bone broths→ they make a variety of different drink mixes, dried goods, and several versions of their reset kits. Call us their new biggest fans! And we know you’ll feel the same way.

After a whirlwind summer, I decided to embark on a 5-Day Reset this fall. Read about my experience with the reset and various Kroma products below… I think you’ll want to try it out next!

Kroma

Q: Colette, what inspired you to want to try the Kroma 5-Day Reset?

A: Summer can feel like an endless whirlwind of social obligations, events, and just generally trying to pack every ounce of fun into every spare moment (anyone else??). And let’s be real, I’m here for it. BUT by the end of this summer I was feeling like it was time to kick my butt into gear, and get back on track with some healthier habits. I love that the Kroma Reset kits give you 95% of the things you need to accomplish the reset–it’s perfect for busy people who want to reset but can’t add an extensive grocery trip and tons of meal prep to their plate.

Follow up: What results were you hoping to achieve?

A: I was hoping to come away with more energy, and add healthier habits back into my daily routine. I’m on the go a lot, and I find myself eating out and/or reaching for easy and sometimes unhealthy choices (especially when I’m on the brink of starvation) so I was curious to see if this could help me kick some of those habits! I chose the lifestyle protocol, below.

Kroma has three protocols for their reset:

Weight-loss: If you’re hoping to achieve weight-loss during the 5-day period, this protocol has very few add-ins to the kit that you get.

Lifestyle: In this protocol, you’re looking to switch to healthier habits, reset your body and gut, and can add in things like vegetables to their bone broths, and berries/nut milk to the porridge and protein smoothies.

Athletic: This is a protocol for those who need to maintain a higher caloric intake, and allows for adding in more lean proteins.

Q: How user-friendly did you find the process?

A: Extremely user-friendly. They provide you with everything you need, including a cup, frother and pouch to take your packets on-the-go.

Here’s what I bought, that wasn’t included in the kit:

Q: What pleasantly surprised you about the experience?

A: I wasn’t nearly as hungry as I thought I would be. By using just the packets (no grocery add-ins), you’re looking at a little more than 1,000 calories, so with the few things I added in, I felt very satisfied for most of the day.

Q: What was an unexpected challenge you encountered?

A: Oddly enough, one of the biggest challenges was trying to complete all of the packets in the right order at the right times. On two days I found myself having my “lunch” broth at 5 PM.

Q: Which superfood turned out to be your favorite?

A: I really did like them all, but the biggest surprise for me has to be the matcha.

On the reset, you can’t have coffee, but they do provide you with a morning matcha. Before the reset, I was truly not a matcha girl, and I can say with confidence that their Beauty Matcha has essentially replaced my morning coffee, even two weeks later.

Q: Any you struggled with?

A: I don’t love chocolate protein powder for whatever reason, so that was probably my least favorite thing, but I did love the vanilla cinnamon!

Q: How do you feel?

A: After the reset I felt great! I’m still incorporating the matcha, greens powder, vanilla protein powder & broths into my daily life.

Q: Would you do it again?

A: Absolutely. I’m planning to do it again in the spring.

Q: Any tips you would give to someone looking to try it?

A: My husband did the reset with me, which I think made a big difference because I wasn’t having to watch everyone in my family eat meals like lasagne while I was sipping on bone broth–definitely recommend resetting with a partner or friend! I also purposefully picked a week where I had zero social obligations for 5 days, which was key for my success.

Thank you to Colette for embarking on Kroma's 5-Day Reset! Go to www.kromawellness.com to learn more. And check out our full selection of Kroma products at our downtown location.

This recipe celebrates Fall's rustic bounty and has unique flavor notes stemming from the tang of vinegar and the use of Sumac spice. The deep burgundy hue of the sumac berry is ground and dried- and imparts a surprising tart, lemony flavor with refreshing complexity.

Brightland is a women-owned company, with sustainable farm partners throughout sunny California. Their artful UV-protected bottles can be recycled- or lovingly up-cycled into decorative vessels for flowers, candles, branches and stems. We love Brightland because of their delicious and diversified flavor profiles- with special editions and seasonal releases that keep us hooked.

Now, a unique take on roasted carrots to kick of your cooler-weather cooking.

Ingredients:

Instructions:
  1. Preheat oven to 400F.

  2. Cut the carrots into long stalks, about 4 inches and halved lengthwise if too thick. Make sure they are all around the same size.

  3. In a small mixing bowl, whisk together the honey, vinegar, olive oil, oregano, sumac, salt, and pepper until emulsified.

  4. Place the carrots on a large sheet pan in a single layer, don’t overcrowd and use two sheet pans if needed.

  5. Drizzle the dressing evenly over the carrots and toss well to coat. Pour an additional drizzle of Awake Extra Virgin Olive Oil on top.

  6. Roast for about 30 minutes or until the carrots are tender and fully cooked.

  7. Transfer to a serving dish and drizzle with tahini.

  8. Garnish the carrots with herbs, pumpkin seeds, and a sprinkle of sumac to finish.

  9. Enjoy!
